Why should I buy a Thermory barrel instead of a Cedar barrel?
Thermory, based in Estonia with production facilities throughout the Baltics and Finland—the heart of sauna culture—is the world’s largest manufacturer of wood sauna materials. We use a precise thermal modification process that removes the natural sugars, enhancing decay resistance and stability while providing a rich, consistent color. This combination of thermal modification and traditional Finnish design results in the most aesthetically pleasing, functional, and durable saunas on the market.
What are the benefits of Thermo spruce/Thermo Aspen over cedar or other non-modified woods?
- Color: Our thermal modification process gives the wood a deep, consistent color, unlike the uneven, zebra-like patterns of cedar.
- Stability: Unlike cedar, which expands and contracts with moisture changes, thermally modified wood is highly stable, meaning fewer adjustments are needed for the sauna’s metal bands.
- Lifespan: Thermo Spruce has a Class 1 durability rating, offering over 25 years of rot resistance, compared to cedar’s 10-15 years. Thermally modified barrels last at least three times longer than those made from unmodified wood.
Is there enough room to bring my spin bike into the sauna?
Yes, our 60 series Barrels and Square saunas provide about 50% more room than other saunas, with a diameter of over seven feet.
CONSTRUCTION
How is Thermory’s construction different from competitors?
Our saunas feature 1.65” thick barrel staves for enhanced sturdiness, minimizing rocking or squeaking. This thickness improves insulation, reducing heat loss and energy costs, offering better sound insulation. The 60 series barrels have an interior diameter of over 7 feet, providing ample space and preventing the cramped feeling typical of smaller models. The benches and flooring are made from thermally modified aspen, which is more durable and scratch-resistant than cheaper softwoods. Our wider benches also allow for comfortable lounging.
Do I need the rain jacket?
While not mandatory, the rain jacket is highly recommended if the barrel is exposed to the elements. Though thermally modified wood is stable, water can seep between the staves, and condensation may accumulate on the ceiling, eventually dripping onto the floor. A rain jacket helps prevent this and adds extra insulation.
Can I remove the rain jacket in the summer and put it back on in the winter?
You could remove the rain jacket if the sauna won’t be used for an extended period, but it’s designed to be left in place. Most people prefer not to worry about removing and reinstalling it, so leaving it on year-round is perfectly fine.
Does Thermory offer installation?
We don’t offer installation services, but we provide a detailed manual to guide homeowners, contractors, and electricians. Additionally, our network of partners throughout the U.S. and Canada can help you choose the right sauna and ensure proper installation.
What is the ideal surface to put the sauna on?
A sauna should be placed on a solid, level surface that can support its weight and offers good water drainage. Concrete is ideal, but a well-constructed deck, crushed gravel, or paver stones will also work.
How much room is required to install the sauna?
The space required depends on the model you choose. It’s important to allow enough room around the sauna for maintenance. Size requirements for each model can be found in the installation manuals.
Are these difficult to assemble?
Our prefabricated units can be installed relatively easily by two individuals with basic carpentry . However, electrical hookups must be completed by a trained and certified electrician. Installation manuals for all DIY saunas are available here.
Can I do it myself or should I hire someone?
This depends on your skill level. Two people with minimal DIY experience can install the sauna in about a day, but hiring a professional for installation could be faster and less stressful. A trained and certified electrician should handle the electrical work.
What tools are required for assembly?
You’ll need a tape measure, a 6-foot level, two 9 mm wrenches, a rubber mallet, a cordless drill/driver, and a step ladder. Proper safety equipment is also recommended.
How long do they take to assemble?
Assembly time depends on the installer’s skill level, but most saunas can be installed in a day with two people. Electrical connections for the heater will require additional time.
How are the doors adjusted? They do not fit perfectly.

How thick are the staves?
The staves are 1.65 inches thick.
Does Thermory Wood contain allergens?
While the wood has not been specifically tested for allergens, the thermo-treatment process reduces naturally occurring formaldehyde and eliminates other substances that may cause allergies.
HEATING
Is the barrel insulated, and how much heat loss can be expected?
While the barrel itself is not insulated, our saunas are built with 1.65” thick staves and 8mm glass, significantly reducing heat loss compared to competitors. This thicker material improves both strength and heat retention.
Is there less heat loss with a solid back wall versus the panoramic window?
Yes, a solid back wall retains heat better, but most find the panoramic window worth the view!
Can I upgrade the heater to a larger kW size?
Yes, please consult with one of our retail partners or a Thermory sauna representative for recommendations.
How many heater options are there?
Huum offers several heater options, including electric and wood-fired heaters. Consult with one of our retail partners or a Thermory sauna representative for recommendations.
What are the power requirements for the heater?
All Huum heaters require a 240V connection. A certified electrician should follow the instructions for proper wiring and installation.
Do I need an electrician?
Yes, a certified electrician is required for the installation of the heater.
I don't see a plug for the heater. How do I plug it in?
Huum heaters must be hardwired into your home by a certified electrician, following proper wiring requirements for your model.
How will a sauna affect my electric bill?
This will vary based on sauna size, temperature preferences, usage frequency, and local climate.
Can the UKU controller be installed outside?
Yes, but it should be installed in a dry area where temperatures will not exceed 104℉ (40℃).
Does it need a protective cover?
A protective cover is not necessary if the UKU controller is properly installed.
Can Thermory saunas be turned on with a phone app?
Yes, a Huum UKU WiFi controller allows you to control and monitor your electric Huum heater from anywhere using your phone.
How long does it take to heat the sauna to 200℉?
This depends on the size of both your heater and sauna.
Does Thermory sell wood stoves or just electric heaters?
Thermory currently offers only Huum electric sauna heaters. However, we have many partners that carry additional options and can provide their contact information for your convenience.
Can I purchase a sauna without a heater?
Yes, Thermory or one of our retail partners can sell you a sauna without a heater, allowing you to choose and install your own.
What temperature will a Thermory sauna reach?
The temperature will vary depending on the size and make of both your heater and sauna.
Can an IR heater be installed in a Thermory barrel sauna?
Yes, but please consult the IR heater manufacturer’s guidelines to ensure compatibility with a Thermory sauna.
MAINTENANCE & CARE
How do I maintain the exterior of the sauna?
If you prefer the natural aged look, our thermally modified spruce requires minimal maintenance. Just wash it occasionally to remove dirt, pollen, and debris. Over time, it will naturally age to a beautiful silver patina.
I want to maintain the original color. What should I use?
We recommend using a penetrating wood oil with a UV inhibitor to keep your barrel looking new. Reapply periodically based on the product and your climate, following the manufacturer’s recommendations for the best results.
How do I maintain the interior of the sauna?
We recommend applying Supi Sauna Wax right after assembly. Supi penetrates the wood, creating a barrier to moisture and dirt, preserving the interior. For cleaning, use Supi Saunapesu Sauna Cleaner. Together, these products will keep your sauna fresh for years.
How do Thermory Barrels perform in harsh mountain winter climates?
Thermory saunas are built to withstand various climates, but we recommend consulting a Thermory representative for specific recommendations regarding extreme environments.
Have they been approved for use in Florida hurricane areas?
Consult a Thermory representative to confirm suitability for hurricane-prone areas, as local building codes and requirements may vary.
PURCHASING & SHIPPING
Can I purchase a sauna directly from you?
We have an extensive and growing network of retail and custom builder partners throughout the U.S. and Canada. If there’s a partner near you, we’ll gladly refer you for the best service. However, if that’s not ideal, we’re happy to work with you directly.
How are Thermory Saunas delivered?
Delivery depends on whether you purchase from a retail partner or directly from Thermory. Retailers may offer delivery and installation services, while direct purchases will be crated and shipped via a common carrier with a lift gate.
How are the saunas packaged?
All saunas are packaged in crates and are ready for assembly.
Are they shipped assembled?
No, they are shipped disassembled in crates for on-site assembly.
Can they be delivered into my garage?
Garage delivery may be available for an additional fee, depending on access and location.
Do you ship to Hawaii or Alaska?
Yes, we deliver to all 50 states, including Hawaii and Alaska, as well as all provinces in Canada. Delivery is also available to parts of the Caribbean and Latin America.
What happens if parts are damaged during delivery?
Document the damage on the bill of lading from the shipper and take clear photos of the damaged areas. Notify your place of purchase and/or Thermory as soon as possible. If the damage seems excessive, you may refuse the delivery.
What is the warranty?
Thermory saunas come with a 2-year limited warranty, and Huum sauna heaters have a 5-year limited warranty (excluding heater elements).
